In April, the number of passenger vehicles sold in the local market saw a slight increase of 1.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching 3,35,629 units, up from 3,31,278 units in the previous year, according to a report released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers on Tuesday.

The two-wheeler market witnessed a significant surge, with sales soaring by approximately 31% to 17,51,393 units in the current month, up from 13,38,588 units in the same period last year. Motorcycles saw a substantial 34.4% year-over-year increase, with 11,28,192 units sold, compared to 8,39,274 units in April 2023. Meanwhile, scooter sales also experienced a notable 25.2% year-over-year growth, reaching 5,81,277 units, up from 4,64,389 units in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In April, the sales of three-wheeler vehicles increased by 14.5% year-on-year to reach 49,116 units, up from 42,885 units sold in the same month the previous year.

The overall sales figure, combining all categories, experienced a 25% surge, reaching 21,36,157 units in the current month, up from 17,12,812 units in April 2023, according to the latest SIAM monthly report.

Vinod Aggarwal, President of SIAM, mentioned that the auto industry has seen a positive start to the year 2024-25, with growth reported across all segments in April 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. This growth can be attributed to favorable consumer attitudes and the occurrence of festivities during this period.

He stated that increased monsoon rainfall, consistency in policies after elections, and the government’s focus on boosting manufacturing and infrastructure will drive the overall economic growth, thus supporting the continuous growth of the automotive sector.
